The mission of BikeNotes.org is to improve conditions for bicycling.
Increase safety for bicyclists.
Increase efficiency, convenience and ease of bicyclists' trips.
Increase comfort and decrease stress for bicyclists.
Increase public interest in bicycling, including increasing the percentage of transportation done by bicycle.
Increase the perception of and actual reliability of bicycling facilities, especially roads and routes.
Decrease, on an ongoing basis, the number of severe and minor injuries, and deaths befalling bicyclists.
Maintain an information source of bicycling incidents that can be used as education for bicyclists and others in order to eliminate bicyclist casualties incrementally.
The first major website undertaking will be focused on providing a tool for bicyclists in Austin, Texas to report and view specific issues of importance to them as bicyclists.
Examples will include bicyclist reporting of unsafe street surfaces, areas difficult to navigate safely, and collisions / incidents. With this publicly-accessible information, bicyclists, the City of Austin, and the community at large will be able to address each specific issue. Also, by using aggregate information, it will be easier to identify larger patterns and address issues on a broader scale.
If use and utility of this website is strong, the next steps will include expanding the breadth of tools, adding other geographic areas, and offering access in multiple languages.
Beginning in December 2006 I will be regularly posting bicycle incident information, mostly
from public records.
You are encouraged to send your own incident information to me for
posting. This source of information will become a primary focus in the future, and
an online method will become available soon for the public to easily submit information.
Your input is what will make this site a success.
I will also be compiling and posting to the website a comprehensive list of Austin-area
bicycling organizations along with other useful resources and contacts.
